The Office is starting to plan a spin-off featuring the one and only Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson).
According to Deadline.com, NBC and The Office executive producers are in the works of developing a show that focuses on Dwight’s outside life at his family establishment, Schrute Farms. The beet farm and bed and breakfast has been mentioned and featured on The Office since season 2, and being the focus of an episode this season.
The potential new spin-off is set to debut in early 2013, and even if The Office is renewed for season 9 (which it most likely will be), Wilson will continue his role on The Office for the first half of the year, then transition into his new show presumably at midseason.
This is the first season of The Office without longtime star Steve Carrell, and even though ratings are down this season – averaging 6 million viewers and a 3 rating in the A18-49 rating, The Office is still one of NBC’s highest rated series.
While NBC’s last sitcom spin-off attempt Joey (Friends) was less than favorable among viewers, I think the people behind The Office and Parks and Recreation will be able to take one of The Office’s most loved character and see him in a way we’ve never seen before, him in his natural habitat.
The Office airs Thursdays at 9p.m. on NBC
