Late Wednesday evening, new broke NBC would be launching a spin-off of its flagship sitcom The Office featuring Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson).
Right after the news broke, Rainn took to his Twitter to put to rest any rumors that were speculating about a Dwight spin-off, tell multiple sources that “a character as annoying as Dwight would be the worst idea for a spin-off.”
Now, the news is just about confirmed. Sunday at The Screen Actor Guild Awards, where Wilson was nominated for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series for The Office, he told E!’s Guiliana Rancic that the spin-off is indeed in the works. While not going into too many details, Wilson told E! “we’re talking about a Dwight Schrute spin-off that could be really cool. It would have a variety of characters…they would be even more weird and far out than The Office.”
The Dwight spin-off – which will feature Dwight’s family beet farm/bed and breakfast, and all of his family who live and run the business – will be run as an Office episode this season to give the audience a sense of that the potential new series would be like. If the series test well with the audience with it airs, the spin-off will be slated for a midseason 2013 debut.
When The Office premiered in March 2005, it featured on of the most diverse, off-beat, awkward, and interesting characters on a network sitcom. If this Dwight spin-off can promise even more outrageous characters, including Dwight, the new spin-off may be worth looking out for.
