HBO has given the fantasy series Game of Thrones an early pickup for its third season. HBO made the announcement this morning.
Games of Thrones premiered last week to a stunning 3.9 million viewers. The total number of the season premiere climbed to 6.3 million viewers when repeats, DVR playback, and online viewing was factored it. The second episode, which aired Sunday, drew in 3.8 million viewers, just about matching the numbers of the premiere.
The third season of Game of Thrones is expected to be based on the first half of George R.R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords, the third book from the “Songs of Fire and Ice” series. This book is expected to be split into two seasons since the book itself is 1,216 pages long. If the third season of Game of Thrones is based on this book (it hasn’t been confirmed yet), you can guarantee a season 4 will be in the works in the future.
Catch Game of Thrones Sunday nights at 9p.m. on HBO.
