As surprising as it may sound, Netflix has never won an Outstanding Comedy or Drama Series Emmy award. Tonight at the 91st Academy Awards, Netflix may actual win an Oscar for Best Picture before it wins an Emmy for best series.
Foreign-language film Roma is widely projected to win Best Picture, making Netflix the first streaming service to take home a top prize at the Oscars. It would be extremely ironic if this were to happen as Netflix originally set to take over the television industry.
It’s not as if Netflix hasn’t had plenty of opportunities to win the top prize at the Emmys. House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, GLOW, Stranger Things, The Crown, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Master of None have all been nominated in the past but have never been able to claim the top prize.
Hulu became the first streaming service to win Outstanding Drama Series in 2017 for The Handmaid’s Tale, and Amazon winning Outstanding Comedy in 2018 with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
It will be interesting tonight to see if Netflix takes home an Oscar before it takes home an Emmy.
