24 Years After Being Fired from “Saturday Night Live” Can Adam Sandler Win His First Emmy?

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards celebrate and honor outstanding achievements in artistic and technical achievements in television. This year’s awards are being distributed this Saturday and Sunday night and I’m going to break down my predictions for for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

  • Matt Damon – Saturday Night Live
  • Robert De Niro – Saturday Night Live
  • Luke Kirby – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Peter MacNicol – Veep
  • John Mulaney – Saturday Night Live
  • Adam Sandler – Saturday Night Live
  • Rufus Sewell – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Winner – Adam Sandler, Saturday Night Live

Adam Sandler hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time 24 years after being fired from the show. During his triumphant return, he didn’t miss a beat! It was evident that he was thrilled to be back and excelled in his hosting duties and being back in the studio that made him a household name.

Not only did Sandler bring back classic SNL character Opera Man to “Weekend Update”, the sketch “Sandler Family Reunion” was one of the highlights of the episode. It was a great reminder of some of Sandlers’ most famous characters from his post-SNL days with various SNL cast members portraying his most famous performances from Billy Madison, Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer and Billy Madison. His “Romano Tours” sketch imitating Perillo Tours travel agent Steve Perillo was absolutely spot on!

Sandler had a great musical monologue with a surprise appearance from Chris Rock, who was also fired from SNL the same season as Sandler. What sealed the deal for me in Sandler winning his first Emmy was his poignant musical tribute to his best friend and Saturday Night Live co-star Chris Farley. Sandler ended the episode playing the guitar to the backdrop of a montage of Farley. The performance was unexpected and left an emotional lump in my throat. One can only hope it won’t another 24 years for Adam Sandler to return to Saturday Night Live!

The Creative Arts Emmys take place Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th and the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and air Saturday, September 21st on FXX.
