Will Another “Saturday Night Live” Host Going Win Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the Emmys?

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards celebrate and honor outstanding achievements in artistic and technical achievements in television. This year’s awards are being distributed this Saturday and Sunday night and I’m going to break down my predictions for for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

  • Jane Lynch – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Sandra Oh – Saturday Night Live
  • Maya Rudolph – The Good Place
  • Kristen Scott Thomas – Fleabag
  • Fiona Shaw – Fleabag
  • Emma Thompson – Saturday Night Live

Winner – Emma Thompson, Saturday Night Live

This was a tough category to for me to predict, but ultimately decided to go with Emma Thompson for her enjoyable and often hilarious turn as host of Saturday Night Live. Thompson’s sketch “Etiquette Lesson” with Leslie Jones was nothing but three minute slap fest, but it was the best sketch of the evening and elicited the biggest laughs from the audience, and myself. Thompson’s “The Perfect Mother” with Heidi Garner was also a delight “Will Thompson win an Emmy just for slapping Leslie Jones and playing an overwhelmed young stay-at-home mother?

The Television Academy has been on a streak for rewarding female host of Saturday Night Live over the past few years. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler won in 2016, Melissa McCarthy in 2017 and Tiffany Haddish in 2018. That trend could easily continue on 2019. The caveat is, Sandra Oh is also nominated for her SNL hosting duties this year, in addition to her Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series nomination for Killing Eve. While it’s not out of the realm of possibility to win two awards in one evening, I want Oh to prevail for Killing Eve, which she is exponentially for deserving of.

Kristen Scott Thomas also received rave reviews for her guest turn on Fleabag, so that could also be an upset – but I’m sticking with the Saturday Night Live trend and placing my bets on Emma Thompson.

The Creative Arts Emmys take place Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th and the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and air Saturday, September 21st on FXX.
